I caught myself praying these meaningless words “God, I want to…” and “God, I’ll try…” and then I stopped myself. Then, correcting myself, “God, I will…”
It’s not enough to want to keep away from sin. Actual commitment and obedience comes from actually doing it. I easily think it’s just enough to want something, but at the same time, there’s another part of me that wants something else (Rom 7:21-23). I’m being honest when I say “I want,” but wanting is weak. Anybody can want a promotion at work, you can want a higher score, you want to overcome that drug habit. But it’s not enough to want something. If you “want” it bad enough, you’ll “do.” What’s worse is the pathetic term, “I’ll try.” It means nothing. Are you going to the meeting? “I’ll try.” yeah right. Are you coming to church this Friday? “I’ll try.” ok, I won’t save you a seat. “I’ll try” is just like saying “we’ll see.” nothing wrong with that, but don’t make it something it’s not. It’s a no-effort statement. Do I have the pathetic notion that God will pat me on the back, “Well, at least you ‘tried.’” No. If I tried, I wouldn’t have sinned.
I never ask God if he “wants” to love me or bless me. I don’t ask him to “try” to forgive me. He does what he says he’ll do. It’s written in his Word. I gotta just “do” it. “wants” and “trys” won’t get me anywhere.
Make history. Don’t just live in it.
